企画書・概要 (Abstract of Project Proposal)

The animal remains recovered from excavations at archaeological sites are not only for "archeology". These remains are relics from the past but they are also materials that can contribute to the present and future preservation and management of wild animals. Our research aims to use archaeological data to make clear the historical distribution of wild animals. Through the study of the environmental and human causes of the the expansions and contractions of these distributions, we aim to contribute to "zoology".
The archaeological excavations so far have contributed greatly to the history of human activity through the study of hunting and fishing methods used at that time. Presently, there is no research being done on the history of animals that were affected by human activity. Due to the fact that the scientists who handle the excavated animal remains are likely to be inclined toward historical and archaeological study, their interest lies with the social sciences and they are indifferent toward archaeozoology.
Our research results, even when applied to cultural properties, is anticipated to find new links that are unobtainable in the present research methods. So far, archaeological research results have been focused on history museum exhibits but these results can also contribute to natural history museums with displays and educational activities featuring a synthesis of history and nature.
