企画書・概要 (Abstract of Project Proposal)

"The core of any community is its voice. With this voice, we can plan for the future together. It is with this voice that we can let others help us." This quotation is from an Ishinomaki fisherman who has lost his boat and is now living in temporary housing. This is our guiding message. We are an international team of ethnographers recording, transcribing, and translating oral narrative interviews in Rikuzen Takata, Ishinomaki, and Minami Sanriku. As communities all over Tohoku are rebuilding, our oral narrative interview project provides a record of past struggle, sacrifice in the present, and commitment to the future. These long-format narratives will be collected (Phase 1), edited (Phase 2), and disseminated (Phase 3) through video documentaries. These will be a first step in creating a community archive in each village, as well as a contribution to the new field of "disaster anthropology". They will be gathered in a multi-lingual archival database as the Japan-node of an emerging global network of policy makers, NPOs, and scholars engaged in the comparative study of crisis and recovery.
