An Involvement of Hinduism and Buddhism of Nepal in Dapha Music and its Tradition

企画書・概要

Abstract of Project Proposal

Dapha music is the sacred music of a praise style, which was developed in Malla period, a medieval period of Nepal. It has been handed down by the Hindu and the Buddhist Dapha groups of Newar people in Kathmandu Valley. The songs of Dapha music consists of poetry in Sanskrit and old Newari as well as in Mathili language which put the gratitude to the deities and the kings. From the ancient times in Nepal, the Hindus and the Buddhists are bound together by the sense of fellow-feeling and lives together in the same community. Therefore, both these co-religionists displays their worship of common deities and celebration of many festivals jointly. Such cultures are also seen in traditional performing art. Dapha music is one in such tradition, which is performed in front of temples and the old palaces of Kathmandu Valley. This research studies about the role of Dapha music in the context of connection between Hinduism and Buddhism in Nepalese society, which keeps them together.

Summary of Final Report

Dapha music is the sacred music of a praise style, which was developed in Malla period, a medieval period of Nepal. It has been handed down by the Hindu and the Buddhist Dapha groups of Newar people in Kathmandu Valley. The songs of Dapha music consists of poetry in Sanskrit and old Newari as well as in Maithili language which put the gratitude to the deities and the kings. From the ancient times in Nepal, the Hindus and the Buddhists are bound together by the sense of fellow-feeling and lives together in the same community. Therefore, both these co-religionists displays their worship of common deities and celebration of many festivals jointly . Such cultures are also seen in traditional performing art. Dapha music is one in such tradition, which is performed in front of temples and the old palaces of Kathmandu Valley.
It is the kind of artistic and religious music that creates the mood of festivity, which is considered as one of the unique music culture of Nepal. It has the concept of Raga (melodic structure) and Tala (rhythmic structure) which is common with the Indian classical music system. However, it differs from the style of the Hindustani classical music performed in North India today.
Only few studies have been done despite of being the rare traditional music of South Asia which has been handed down from generation to generation in an unchanged form. There are still several issues to be studied on Dapha music. Since few years before I have been also studying the Dapha music in the cultural, musical and social point of view. I have noted that an active participations of Hindus and Buddhists people is one of the most interesting issue on Dapha music that which deep meaning to build the peaceful nation in Nepal. I have realized that this issue is one of the most important issue to know not only about the musical significant of Dapha music but also to understand the social and cultural scenario of Kathamandu Valley. In this way, I came to choose this theme to clarify about the role of Dapha music in the context of connection between Hinduism and Buddhism in Nepalese society, which has been keeping them together.
The method of research had been carried out by conducting analysis on the cultural, social and political history and tradition of Kathmandu Valley through various manuscripts and documents collected during research period. It has also conducted the field survey over various Dapha live performances as well as its tradition behind the stage such as, the system of teaching and learning, way of organizing festivals, managing style of Dapha groups etc , which have been carefully noted.
This research concludes that Hinduism and Buddhism have been existed in Nepal since old period without any religious conflict though they have different philosophy that contrasts to each other. Furthermore, the Malla Kings of medieval period in Nepal put the effort to engage them together in various festivals created by Malla King themselves to design the rich and peaceful society. And, Dapha music is one of those tradition in Nepal which has been applied to involve both Hindus and Buddhists people jointly.
