(Abstract of Project Proposal)

During the past 3 years, with support from the Toyota Foundation, the Kumamoto Gakuen University (KGU) in close collaboration with the Thai environmentalist NGO, the Ecological Alert and Recovery – Thailand (EARTH), has facilitated the local communities’ participatory research on the water quality and carried out sociological investigation to identify issues to be addressed for the local communities to work together with the industries for the better future. Earlier this year, we were able to help organize a workshop in which Thai stakeholders, including representatives from both the local communities and industries, engaged in dialogues and other risk communication exercises among themselves.

In this project, we are proposing to hold a symposium at Bangkok to discuss and share the experiences of the 2012 risk communication workshop with, mainly but not exclusively, various NGOs and community organizations in Thailand. We are also planning to organize a workshop as a pre-event in Rayong Province, to share our experiences over hazard communication during industrial accidents and discuss their lessons and implications to Thailand.
