企画書・概要 (Abstract of Project Proposal)

The aim of this project is to explore political dynamics of the treatment of sick and wounded soldiers in Imperial Japanese Army, focusing on "War-Neurosis", which is regarded as reaction after war trauma nowadays. In the Japanese military history, little attention has been given to the medical and hygienic sphere and most of the studies of "War-Neurosis" have aimed for conducting war or learning a lesson from war. This study reconsiders the subject from the viewpoint of the relationship between the military and society in modern Japan which has been actively researched since 1980s.
This project consists of three research subjects. The first is to give an overview of the flow of movement of sick and wounded soldiers from the front to the homeland by examining medical records which have been gained by freedom of information system. The second is to consider the relationship between patients and doctors in the clinic to look deeper into micro-politics. The third is to illustrate the experience of soldiers who suffered from war trauma outside military medicine and to consider the cultural and social aspects of the illness.
By investigating the above subjects, this project can let the people who don't have war experience imagine what war has brought to soldiers' mind and body and how their lives have changed.
