企画書・概要 (Abstract of Project Proposal)

The shape of the family is in the process of dramatic transformation in many Asian countries including Japan. Yet, unlike in Nordic countries, politics has not caught up with the rapid transformation of the family. As the family is one of the basic units of national welfare, recent drops in the fertility rates in Asia, for instance, underline the severity of potential social problems that changes in shapes and notions of the family can bring about. Our project empirically investigates the societal consequences of "mismatches" between the realities of families and people's ideas about families, and also of those between the realities and ideas of families, on the one hand, and national policies, one the other hand. Our goal is to provide social scientific data for thinking about solutions to cope with the changing needs of the family; and also to contribute to the debate on what a sustainable model of society might look like. More specifically, we will identify how realities and ideas of the family have changed in Asia, explore when and how "mismatches" might emerge between people's notions and realities of the family, and examine the consequences of such mismatches. We also compare how different governments have addressed these mismatches, and investigate the factors behind different policy responses. Our project is an interdisciplinary one that involves sociology and comparative politics.
