企画書・概要 (Abstract of Project Proposal)

Various aspects of the life of Myanmar refugees are observed through documentary film making such as their daily life, family problems, children's life, religion, and culture. The identity of the Karen people and its change through camp life are looked into.
A civil war was fought for more than 60 years between the military regime of the ethnic majority and the minority groups including the Karen. As a result, beginning in 1984 the minorities began to take refuge across the Thai border. They have been living separated in seven camps near the Thai border, their number today amounting to 140,000.
As a result of the cease-fire and a move of towards democratization in Myanmar in recent years, discussion is undergoing among the relevant authorities on the return of the refugees to their native areas.
Meanwhile, long years of refugee life have caused an inevitable influence over the lifestyle of the people. In particular, the flood of market economy caused big changes in customs, religion, and other cultural life. In other words, the identity of the Karen people is changing as they staying in a foreign land.
This project is aimed at specifically defining the Karen identity and describing its change through refugee life. This will be done by closely capturing their life through video and personal interviews. Attention will also be paid on interactions between political conflicts and ethnic battles, which often complicate refugee problems in many areas of the world. It will be possible to extend the understanding of the Karen case to an understanding of more general refugee cases, in a hope of making policy proposals and building a model for solving generalized refugee problems.
