Discovery and Transmission of New Values of Cultural Heritages in Local Communities: Aiming to Establish a Basis for Utilization of the Cultural Heritages by Public Participation in Kharakhorin District, Mongolia
Faculty of Letters, Nara University
企画書・概要 (Abstract of Project Proposal)
In the Kharakhorin sum/district, Ovorkhangai aimag/province, Mongolia, the Kharakhorum city ruins of the 13th century and the Erdene Zuu temple, the oldest temple existing in Mongolia, are registered as the world cultural heritage site of "Orkhon Valley Cultural Landscape".
People living in the neighboring communities, because they lack in knowledge and do not live a nomadic life in a way that helps the preservation of cultural landscapes, are given little chance to participate in the preservation and the utilization activities of these sites, and this is leading to the destruction of the cultural heritages by the people themselves. Moreover, the very existence of the communities has been looked upon as an obstacle damaging the cultural scenery. However, is this really true?
The object of this research is firstly to clarify how the people understand the cultural heritages, and the survey, carried out through their interviews, is expected to contribute to the promotion of local recognition of the heritages. Secondly, the research tries to help the people disseminate by themselves what significance and diverse values cultural heritages bear in the local community. Finally, it will lay a base for the utilization of cultural heritages in this area through local participation.
