企画書・概要 (Abstract of Project Proposal)

In post conflict societies in Africa, youth are faced with a variety of difficulties in areas such as education, employment, and local and kinship relations. The aim of this project is to elucidate the dynamics of solidarity and cooperation rebuilt and promoted among youth associations in post conflict local communities in South Sudan. In fact, traditional communities in this region are well known for elaborated youth organizations based on age-set system. During the civil war, these age-sets played an important role in agitating people to fight. On the other hand, when it comes to peace-building, these youth organizations have been recognized as a useful system to rebuild the communities. These age-sets have been reorganized in accordance with social changes and now, as "youth associations", are spreading in the towns and villages. This project will investigate the functions and construction of networks of these associations. In particular, I will focus on the historical process of the reorganization of the associations and "new" styles of cooperation. By doing so, I will explore how the vision for the future built among youth associations affects the whole local communities. I will also hope that this case study of the vision and the constructive role of South Sudanese youth will contribute toward reconsidering the important and positive role youth can play in any local community in this precarious world.
