企画書・概要 (Abstract of Project Proposal)

The irrigation policy of the former Soviet Union resulted in large-scale desiccation of the Aral Sea in the latter part of the 20th century. As a result, severe sand storms, with high levels of salt, have become common occurrences impacting the livelihoods of the local people living there. To alleviate the damage by the increase in sand and to improve the vegetation of the area, Kazakhstan government and international organizations, such as World Bank, UNDP etc. , implemented a number of reforestation projects that aimed to plant a native species of trees called black saxaul (Haloxylon aphyllum), which has a high tolerance for aridity and salinity. It is important to increase the number of mature black saxaul trees in order for their seeds to be effectively dispersed by the wind and other processes. However, because of the severe environmental condition in the desert seabed, the survival rate of seedlings is extremely low and most trees planted remain immature. To increase the number of productive trees in the Aral region, local people can play a key role to improve the current situation, however community support for the planting activities has been limited. Because this project takes into account socio-cultural factors of the region and local attitudes toward the environment, active participation by community members in the project can increase. This method can also be applied to other regions facing similar environmental issues in which multi stakeholders should work together to achieve sustainable outcomes.
