企画書・概要 (Abstract of Project Proposal)

In the old city of Cairo (Historic Cairo), there have been historical monuments since 10th century and traditional habitats has been formed through sustainable urban life. "Historic Cairo" was nominated as a World Heritage site in 1979, in addition to the preservation and conservation work done in Muizz Street during the Mubarak period. However, due to tourism the area lost touch with the daily lives of the inhabitants. With an increasing population and urban area in greater Cairo, the wealthy classes left from "Historic Cairo" to newly planned suburban areas, and impoverished classes came into "Historic Cairo" or the surrounding old areas. Furthermore, since the Egyptian Revolution in 2011, illegal tall buildings were constructed or historical houses were demolished.
Under normal circumstances, historical monuments and traditional habitats should become the identity of the inhabitants and communities. These should be used in keeping with modern developments, and inherited by the next generation. However, this structural outline has never been clear in "Historic Cairo" and its surrounding old area.
In this research project, we will make a working group of inhabitants. Using the knowledge and the experience of cultural heritage which has been accumulated in Japan since 1970's through the rapid economic growth, we will make inquiries of inhabitants opinions and public restrictions for example the municipal policy and preservation of nominated heritage sites. We, researchers and the working group, will think about how the new community that can coexist with its cultural heritage.
