This research project aims to improve maternal and neonatal conditions through reduction of unnecessary medical interventions during delivery and childbirth. To achieve this objective, sessions of group education will be carried out for pregnant women in cooperation with local "women's group" in Phnom Penh city, Cambodia. A large part of deliveries does not experience severe complications, which require invasive interventions. However, vast majority of pregnant women experiences a variety of unnecessary medical acts during their labour. It seems that the situation is accepted as "unavoidable" by pregnant women and considered as "necessary procedure" by health care professionals. Appropriate dialogue between the professionals and the users is a key component to make health care service better. However, the relationship between the two parties is structurally unsymmetrical. Women are always inferior to health professionals, especially in developing countries. This project expects to empower pregnant women by having appropriate knowledge on necessary medical acts in order to facilitate the dialogue with health care providers. This project is complementary to another intervention to health care providers, which aims to implement evidence-based and women-friendly care during labour and childbirth.
