企画書・概要 (Abstract of Project Proposal)

This research project, focusing on the organizers of "FESU" (rock music festivals) as bearers of the increasing social mobility in the contemporary age, investigates the actual conditions of their managing activities and business/cultural problems, and clarifies the generative process of FESU, which are recently enjoying different principles and objectives throughout Japan. Because of greater ease and convenience of moving in physical and info-tech environments, we nowadays embrace some kind of flexibility, which might let us step across the various borders of time, place, and our attributions. While traditional festivals can incubate a high grade of attachment to particular local regions or communities, FESU could be regarded as a contemporary fete blessing us, people who are living across the multiple worlds. The continuous increase of the number of FESU can be regarded as the very evidence of this situation. The methodology of this research will be organized to include interviews with the organizers of the FESUs, and to hold a special workshop which invites the organizers from all over Japan to meet together, to share and exchange their experiences and knowhow. Through observing the process of this workshop, this research project attempts to show the value of the organizers and their activities as the future bearers of the town/human development. Furthermore, by promoting this workshop, held in Niseko district of Hokkaido, where the Ainu and the Wajin (ethnic Japanese), the contemporary people and foreigners have lived and live together, this project aims to be a good opportunity to deepen festival culture study from the viewpoint of human history and civilization.
