企画書・概要 (Abstract of Project Proposal)

In the field of Japanese language education, a lot of research has been done on the education system and on the methodology used before and during the war, but there are no studies that consider the way in which the people who experienced those years of turmoil relate to Japanese as their own language, and try to use those considerations for the future of Japanese language teaching. In our research project, through a process of theoretical sampling, we will conduct interviews in various locations in East Asia and on the American continents. Through these interviews, we will try to reconsider the fundamental meaning of language for people who learned Japanese as a mother tongue, and who, although forced at some point to live in a different linguistic environment, are now trying to live their twilight years in Japanese. We start from the observation that, at present, Japanese language education focuses mostly on methodology and is therefore very close to reaching its limit, even though an investigation into the meaning of why people make a language their own is absolutely necessary. Such an investigation is crucial in understanding how people who find themselves in a different linguistic environment relate to their mother tongue, including future immigrant communities in Japan. Starting from this perspective, the aim of our research is to create a new approach to language education, different from the current one based on methodology.
