企画書・概要 (Abstract of Project Proposal)

The rapid expansion of schools, communication networks and new roads in both Malaysia and Indonesia has impacted local communities. There is now a complex generational rift reflected in attitudes towards language choice and use. In the last 20-30 years, many communities have shifted from their traditional languages to dialects of the national languages. Our objective is to survey the rift in language choice among the oldest generation, their children and the youth under 25 in Maluku (Indonesia), Indonesian Borneo (west Kalimantan) and Malaysian Borneo (Sarawak). Working with villagers we plant to find ways of bridging the intergenerational gap. Language shift in these nations is an emblem of a wider intergenerational gap in cultural, social and economic practices. By focusing on these three ground-level sites with real issues, we can aim at deliverables that can be models for many other regional and social settings. Each selected site team working with villagers across generations will produce a series of video clips in the local language; short, quality booklets of illustrated narratives stories and/or specific vocabularies; and, sponsored speech, story and song contests in the three local languages (youth contestants, oldest generation judges).
