企画書・概要 (Abstract of Project Proposal)

From 1975 to 1979, Cambodia experienced genocide under the Khmer Rouge regime. Thirty-six years have passed since then, Cambodia has just started and rode the wave of high economic growth. A significant knowledge gap exists between the parent generation (50s-60s), who possesses experiential knowledge, and the younger generation (20s- 30s). Currently, this gap is gradually decreasing due to the narratives of the new senior generation. There is a detachment from the dichotomy between the perpetrators and the victims, through a new and common recognition of "the positionality of the negative event" that does not exist in the context of the dichotomy but in that of a mutual recognition of their roles as narrators of that period. Here, one can witness the attempt to utilize local knowledge while reviving social life and passing on "negative memories" to the next generation.
This study aims to examine how the dichotomy between the perpetrators and the victims has been described and how it has been internalized in practical daily life, by conducting survey of the public and local memorial space (comforting the spirit) and by recognizing the new phase of the "transfer of negative memories to the next generation." Furthermore, based on the current increasingly mutual recognition of the "common positionality of the negative event," we suggest the formation of an "active database of negative memories to the next generation."
