企画書・概要 (Abstract of Project Proposal)

The declining birth rate is seen as a highly important political issue, and in its context maternal and child health are very much emphasized. Maternal and child health works with a standardized image of mother and child. Such an image may have an influence on the reproductive behavior of those who deviate from it. This project aims to consider how the standardized image of today has been constructed, and to critically recapitulate the history of maternal and child health.
The history of maternal and child health has been discussed critically from the viewpoints of women's bodily autonomy and eugenics. This project sets up 6 themes, "infertility consulting", "men's participation", "non-Japanese mothers and children", "developmental difficulty", "nutrition in infancy", and "prevention of child abuse". Each project member will trace one or two of these themes from the 1960s through the 2010s. We will then complete a history of maternal and child health by integrating these multiple axes.
The results of this project will provide a basis for the reappraisal of past countermeasures to the declining birth rate, including maternal and child health, and for the discussion of future policy and practice. In addition, the historicization of today's standardized image of mother and child, which will be accomplished by this project, may inspire more practically-oriented studies asking, for example, how this image affects actors including mothers, children, and fathers.
