企画書・概要 (Abstract of Project Proposal)

Recent refugee and economic crises have brought extreme populism causing xenophobia all over the world. In order to avoid further brutal conflicts and create peaceful societies, we need to form urgently multicultural inclusive communities, where diverse people have respect for each other. Urban community gardens can provide opportunities for people to work together with others who have different backgrounds and to understand them through garden activities, which require neither professional skills nor high language skills. People also can share their enjoyment and common goals through growing and eating food. This study aims at examining how much community gardens enhance multicultural inclusiveness and in what way they can be managed effectively. In the first year, case studies in Germany and Austria will be conducted to obtain ideas to manage a community garden, where refugees and immigrants join garden activities. In the second year, referring to the ideas, an intercultural community garden project will be launched in Japan to examine if it can enhance multicultural inclusiveness in Japan as well and what is particular know-how for the management of intercultural community gardens in Japan.
