(Abstract of Project Proposal)

This research focuses on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and reveals how CSR activities have been done in cooperation with government and non-profit organizations (NPOs), played a role in constructing civil society. CSR emphasizes the corporate responsibility for a social influence and use proper decision-making procedures and initiatives for the benefit of stakeholders, such as consumers, stockholders, customers, and civil society as a whole. This research focuses on the role of CSR in development of civil society by examining six themes (diversity, welfare, consumer issues, business, employment, environment) and three actors (corporation, government, NPOs) and by exploring the significance and problems of constructing civil society through CSR activities. Here, Japanese and Korean cases are examined and comparisons by analyzing collaboration among corporations, government, and NPO actors. Japan and Korea are similar in expanding influence of civil society with a stabilized liberal democracy that the central government still holding strong power. Rather than corporations or NPOs contributing to community development alone, the government collaborates with both. It results in many common cases for collaborations among corporations, government, and NPOs between Japan and Korea. The objective of this comparison is to analyze the advantages and disadvantages for CSR collaboration in enriching civil society and democratic traditions with remarking on the differences between the Japanese and Korean political and social cultures. These comparisons are expected to contribute to the examination of an East Asian CSR model. This research is original and unique and will use comprehensive and interdisciplinary measures to examine CSR as themes in constructing community development and civil society. Case studies will be compared to show the significance and effects of CSR in civil society. The outcome of this research will be published in both English and Japanese.
