企画書・概要 (Abstract of Project Proposal)

These days, in many countries, we recognize the rise of chauvinism, which regards minorities, immigrants, and foreigners as major causes of domestic problems. Internationalists are confronted with this tendency, criticizing the fact that today's chauvinism has already been the non-negligible element of the national-level politics rather than the mere phenomenon limited to the hate-speech among ordinary people or the extreme opinions of the right-wing intellectuals.
This project seeks the way of thinking that enables us to avoid falling into the dichotomy between these two poles through the case study of the major North American countries (the United States of America, Canada, and Mexico), where tensions between them have increased since the last U.S. presidential campaign. In order to achieve this purpose, this project pays attention to the fact that the North American countries have been immigrant societies since the "discovery of America," and considers how the conventional idea of the right of natural communication, which serves as a basis of both globalization and protectionism, has been developed in the contemporary global society. In so doing, the project links each set of viewpoints of the following four dichotomy: 1. ideology (theory construction on the basis of the text interpretation) and practice (the interchange of opinions), 2. the past (diachronic analysis) and the present (synchronic analysis), 3. conquerors (Europeans) and the conquered (natives), and 4. the Anglo-Saxon culture (Britain) and the Latin (Spain, France). The outcomes of this project would be opened to the public through journal papers (both in Japanese and English) and a seminar.
