 The purpose of this research project is to consider how to utilize shrine space for the disaster risk reduction of the Nankai Megathrust Earthquake. Since the Great East Earthquake, people has paid attention to the relationship between the location of shrine and natural disaster risk.
 In this project, we try to build a new value structure of the shrine space in order to avoid the risk of large‐scale natural disaster. In addition, we presents the usefulness of its value structure in modern society. As a research method, we carry out a theoretical consideration about shrine space in public policy, through literature survey and interview. And next step is to analyze the space characteristics of the shrine in Wakayama, Tokushima and Awaji by using GIS. In addition, an important feature of this project is to conduct the social experiment concerning disaster prevention at Idate Shrine as a model case.
 The new value structure model of shrine space is proposed by integrating the result of theoretical consideration and social experiment as described above. This value structure model gives modern meaning to "Mubyou‐Sokusai" which is the concept of Japanese traditional happiness. In order to achieve this goal, this project will be carried out based on collaboration with various researchers and experts.
