Student with disabilities in higher education has increased since the "Law to Eliminate Discrimination against People with Disabilities" took effect in April 2016 in Japan. However among all students in institutions for higher education, the enrollment of students with disabilities is only 0.86%. Students with disability are still minorities, and there is little research about experiences of individual students with disabilities. In this project, researchers who themselves have disabilities collaborate to create a "narrative video archive of experiences of students with disabilities." The qualitative research methodology developed by Health Experiences Research Group at Oxford University is adopted. Firstly we collect in-depth interviews with about 40 students with different disabilities, with audio and video recordings. The narratives are analyzed qualitatively, combining thematic analysis with constant comparison, to extract topics such as "taking the entrance exam" or "attending the classes". Segments of interviews in the "narrative video archive" will be delivered on the internet, and the full interview data will be used for secondary analysis. The visual narratives on the internet should contribute to the empowerment of young people with disabilities who are currently enrolled in higher education, as well as those who aspire to enter higher education in the future. Publications based on the secondary analysis of students' narratives should also promote understanding for people with disability among our society.
