企画書・概要 (Abstract of Project Proposal)

Unlike the buildings of the modern age, wooden furniture of the age is not regarded as cultural heritage. As the mass consumption society developed after World War II, such old wooden furniture tended to be lost or discarded in Japan. The cultural groundwork and social systems to reuse the wooden furniture aren't fully developed in Japan yet.
Recently, more than 300 pieces of historical wooden furniture at Kyushu University were rescued by us and they are being kept in Kyushu University Museum. They are a rare and comprehensive collection of early 20th Century school wooden furniture. In this study, we will conduct social experiments, making use of the rescued furniture by testers to verify the effectiveness of our novel concept and preservation method for cultural heritage: 'heritage in use' and 'open preservation'.
We will also conduct field research on the recent practices of the reuse of wooden furniture in Japan and on advanced examples in England.
Referring to the findings and the outcomes of the social experiments and the field research in collaboration with people who share our view, we aim to integrate sustainable systems with mechanisms, both of which create a novel value of old things like old wooden furniture and assist its reuse.
