This project focuses on the East-West Economic Corridor (EWEC) from Lao PDR through Thailand to Myanmar and specifically the two international border crossings within the corridor at Savannakhet, Lao PDR/Mukdahan, Thailand, and Mae Sot, Thailand/Myawaddy, Myanmar. The project’s goal is to support local communities develop cross-border capacity so long-term integration takes place and issues that have led to problems in other cross-border communities can be avoided. The co-learning, participatory approaches that are followed in the project will lead to the development of cross-border networks that, at a local level, manage the integration of the communities. Outputs and expected impacts: 1) Key people, sectors, and potential cross-border networks in the border regions are identified; 2) Management plans to address cross-border issues and development are co-developed; 3) Management techniques are transferred to project participants; 4) New cross-border cultures and communities are identified; 5) Sustainable networks to manage cross-border issues are operating; 6) Local people are empowered to solve cross-border problems; 7) Cross-border community integration and management of border societies in ASEAN countries is improved. The results of this project will be transferred to cross-border areas worldwide that are now, or in the future will be, in the process of integration.
